Deep within the formidable walls of the Peter and Paul Fortress, a chilling presence once lurked. This is the Zotov Bastion. It was named after Count Nikita Zotov, tutor and confidant to Peter the Great. The Zotov Bastion, constructed between 1707 and 1709, and later reinforced between 1727 and 1729, served a darker purpose than mere defense. Designed by Domenico Trezzini, the same architect behind the iconic Peter and Paul Cathedral, the Zotov Bastion housed the offices of the Secret Chancellery. This was the Tsar’s dreaded secret police. Their presence cast a long shadow over the fortress. The very stones seemed to whisper tales of interrogation and intrigue. While other bastions echoed with the clang of arms and the march of soldiers, the Zotov Bastion held an eerie silence. It was a place where secrets were kept, and whispers could lead to imprisonment or worse. Imagine the fear that gripped those summoned to its chambers. The Zotov Bastion stands as a stark reminder of the power and paranoia that shaped Imperial Russia. It offers a glimpse into the darker side of Peter the Great’s reign, a place where the pursuit of order and security sometimes crossed the line into oppression.
