Have you ever imagined a mill standing sentinel for over three centuries? Welcome to the Wiesenmühle a place steeped in history. Built in 1699 by Hans Jakob Kiefer with the blessing of the Mainz Domdechant this mill complex is more than just stones and mortar. It’s a testament to time.

The Wiesenmühle wasn’t just any mill. Its location at the intersection of Flörsheim Hochheim and Wicker boundaries made it unique. Surrounded by the Wickerbachaue nature reserve it possessed an idyllic charm. The mill’s architectural style is intriguing. The main building boasts a sturdy ground floor and an upper story of half-timbered construction. Above the entrance a keystone bears the date 1699. Nearby are other buildings constructed of rough stone and featuring simple sandstone window frames.

The Wiesenmühle’s history is rich with stories of ownership changes. In 1724 it was sold to Johann Edmund Gedult von Jungenfeld a Mainz auxiliary bishop. This is why it was also known as the Bischofsmühle or Jungenfeldsche Mühle. The sale prompted renovations and new constructions. Interestingly the mill also owns a small vineyard the smallest in the Rheingau region. This 0.5-hectare plot produces Riesling and Rivaner wines served at the mill’s inn.

A unique feature is the Annakapelle a small chapel built in 1715. It’s perched on a slope east of the main mill building. The mill’s operation ceased in 1898. It was later converted into an excursion restaurant with poultry farming. After the destruction of World War II the main house was rebuilt in 1948. The original profiled window frames from the 18th century were carefully reused reflecting the care given to preserving this historical treasure.

Today the Wiesenmühle stands as a remarkable example of Frankfurt’s rich history. It’s more than just a historic site. It’s a living story waiting to be explored. A place where the whispers of the past mingle with the lively atmosphere of the present. The Wiesenmühle stands as a testament to resilience. A legacy built on the turning of millstones and the passage of time. Come and discover its secrets for yourself.
