Dreaming of Italy in Texas? That’s the Niels Esperson Building for you.

Welcome to a Houston landmark. The Niels Esperson Building stands as a testament to love and architectural grandeur. It is a striking example of Italian Renaissance design.

This building has a romantic story. Mellie Esperson built it to honor her husband, Niels. Niels was a real estate and oil tycoon. Theirs was a whirlwind romance despite their age difference. Mellie always called him “Mr. Esperson”.

The Niels Esperson Building was completed in 1927. It quickly became the tallest building in Texas. It was also the third tallest in the United States at that time. Architect John Eberson designed it. He was famous for his atmospheric movie theater designs.

Look up and notice the details. The Niels Esperson Building features massive columns and grand urns. A tempietto sits at the top. It resembles one in the courtyard of San Pietro in Rome. Niels’ name is carved above the entrance.

Mellie managed Niels’ empire after he passed away. She proved to be an excellent businesswoman. Later, she commissioned an annex to the Niels Esperson Building. This was the Mellie Esperson Building.

In 1941, the 19-story Mellie Esperson Building was completed. Eberson also designed this building with help from Drew, Mellie’s son. It showcases an Art Deco style. It stands next to the original Niels Esperson Building. Mellie’s name is carved on this structure.

Some say Mellie’s ghost still roams the halls of the Niels Esperson Building. People claim to feel her presence. Her love for Niels is said to linger within these walls.

The Niels Esperson Building also features a basement space. It connects to tunnels beneath downtown Houston. This area has been recently renovated. The design creates a bridge between the Art Deco and Neoclassical lobbies.

The Niels Esperson Building remains one of Houston’s most recognizable buildings. It is a symbol of love, ambition, and architectural beauty. Its legacy continues to inspire. The Niels Esperson Building is a must-see for anyone visiting downtown Houston. It is a reminder of a love story etched in stone.
