Sixty years of faith resonate within these walls. Welcome to the Church of Our Lady of the Annunciation in Amman. This church stands as a testament to faith and community. In 1961, the late Patriarch Alberto Gori blessed its foundation stone. By 1963, the church was consecrated. This became a reality through the generosity of Mr. Wasef Bisharat. He was a Knight of the Holy Sepulcher in Jordan. His contribution ensured that this sacred space could be built.
For many years, from 1965 to 1991, the church served as the headquarters. It was the headquarters of the Patriarchal Vicar in Jordan. Later the headquarters were moved to Sweifieh. The Church of Our Lady of the Annunciation has always been active. Its councils, youth groups, and even a scout troop create a vibrant community. The parish choir fills the church with music. The office of Caritas Jordan is also located here. This highlights the church’s commitment to service.
The Church of Our Lady of the Annunciation marked its 60th anniversary. The Diamond Jubilee was celebrated on Friday, September 30. Bishop Jamal Daibes led the Holy Mass. Fr. Adnan Bader, the parish priest, joined him. Numerous priests, nuns, parishioners, and people from all over Jordan attended.
During the Jubilee, Fr. Adnan Bader spoke about the church. He said joy filled hearts as they honored the Virgin Mother. He said the church is a place where generations have prayed. They loved Jesus Christ within these walls.
Bishop Daibes also shared his thoughts. He noted that the anniversary shows the church’s constant rejuvenation. Parishioners prove the church provides spiritual renewal. He emphasized the church’s name, the Annunciation. It carries a message of vibrant and renewed good news for all believers. The church unites everyone as one family. Together they receive the Lord’s grace.
The story of this church is also the story of the Bisharat family. Wasef Bisharat, his wife Salma Salti Bisharat, and their daughter Najla’ Wasef Bisharat all played a vital role.
