“A temple named after a swamp? That’s unusual!” You might think so, but Wat Si Sai Mun, tucked away in Chiang Mai’s bustling heart, owes its name to just that. Before the city rose around it, this sacred space resided beside the Saimoon swamp. Its origins stretch back to 1487, during the powerful reign of King Tilokarat, a ruler known for his architectural feats. In a time when Chiang Mai was still young, King Tilokarat envisioned a temple that would stand as a testament to faith and resilience. And so, Wat Si Sai Mun was born. The temple we see today isn’t just a collection of beautiful buildings. It’s a treasure chest of stories. Look closely, and you’ll find the grand principal Buddha image. This statue has a tale to tell, a journey from the ancient city of Chiangsaen, north of Chiang Mai. Legend has it that this magnificent Buddha was rescued from the invading Burmese army, carried on the backs of elephants and horses.
