Established in 1854 the Lille 1 University of Science and Technology holds a special place in Lille’s history. Its roots however stretch back even further to 1559 to the founding of the University of Douai. Lille 1 wasn’t always located where it stands today. It originally resided in Lille’s city center. Later it moved to its current suburban location in Villeneuve d’Ascq in 1967. This impressive campus known as the Cité Scientifique covers 1.1 square kilometers.
