Founded in 1958 the Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia stands as a testament to collaborative spirit. A group of cooperativists spearheaded by the Serrano Uribe brothers and Carlos Uribe Garzón envisioned a university. Their goal was to strengthen the solidarity economy particularly through adult education in this doctrine. The Instituto Moses Michael Coady was their first step. It honored a Canadian priest a pioneer in cooperative education.
In 1961 the institute transformed into INDESCO the Institute of Social Economy and Cooperativism. A significant milestone followed in 1963. The National Superintendency of Cooperatives granted INDESCO a license to operate. The university expanded its reach and influence throughout the 1960s. They excelled not only in training but also in consulting for cooperatives. This hard work paid off. In 1968 INDESCO received official recognition as an auxiliary institution of cooperativism.
The university continued to grow. The National Superintendency of Cooperatives granted it legal personality in 1974. Finally in 1983 the Ministry of National Education officially recognized INDESCO as a university. This was a major triumph for the institution and its founders.
The Colombian Constitution of 1991 and Law 30 of 1992 significantly impacted higher education. These changes opened doors for institutions of the solidarity economy. They became a genuine alternative for social transformation and democratization of property and service provision.
The Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia flourished in the 1990s. Five regional centers were consolidated. These were in Bogotá Medellín Barrancabermeja Santa Marta and Bucaramanga. The university expanded to other regions creating multiple campuses nationwide.
In 2002 the Ministry of National Education formally recognized the Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia. Its legal nature as a solidarity economy institution was validated. The university’s commitment to excellence and accreditation continues. It strengthens its national and international relationships invests in infrastructure and technology and innovates in academic programs.
