He chose this area, then known for its horse racing field called al-Malaz Square, to house government employees relocating from Jeddah. The project started in the 1950s with 750 villas, and later expanded to include apartments and essential services. Al Malaz wasn’t just houses though. It was designed with a municipal hall, a library, a fire station, schools, a market, and even recreational and health facilities. This area, Al Malaz, quickly bloomed into a vibrant neighborhood, a symbol of the new era. It became the heart of a bustling community, evolving from a quiet residential area to a dynamic hub.
