Wonder how Fruerlund got its poetic name? Fruerlund in Flensburg has a fascinating story. Let’s dive into the history of this northeastern district.

Fruerlund is nestled near Lautrupsbækken. It is bordered by the Flensburg Fjord. Mürwik lies to the north. Engelsby is southeast and Jürgensby to the south.

First mentioned in 1468, Fruerlund’s name combines “frue” and “lund”. This gives it a poetic feel. Fruerlund isn’t connected to the Virgin Mary. However, Vor Frue Kirken owned land nearby.

Fruerlund likely began as a small village. It branched out from Adelby. In the 1800s, it consisted of two farms. Busesig was a nearby plot.

North of these farms, Fruerlundskov emerged. This was a small cottager town near Klosterskov. Fruerlundlökke was to the west. Fruerlundgård and Fruerlundmölle were to the south.

Fruerlund became an independent municipality in 1869. Then in 1910, it joined Flensburg. This included Tved, Tvedskov, and Engelsby.

New housing estates were built. Fruerlund became part of a continuous residential area. This area connected to Jürgensby and Engelsby. Fruerlundskov has many apartment buildings from the 1960s.

Kilseng and Bläsberg now belong to Fruerlund. Volkspark is in Bläsberg. Mürwik became a separate district.

Before 1864, Fruerlund was part of Adelby Sogn. It was in Husby Herred and Flensburg Amt.

Today, Fruerlund offers much to explore. Osbek valley is on its eastern outskirts. Also nearby are Blasberg with its water tower. Flensburg University’s stadium is close too.

Flensburg’s neighborhoods each have their own feel. Fruerlund is no exception. It sits at a higher elevation. It overlooks the road to the industrial port.
