Hello everyone. Today, we explore this four-hectare sports and recreation area. Hafenpark is in Frankfurt’s Ostend, on the Main’s north bank. It sits between Deutschherrnbrücke, Mayfarthstrasse, and Honsellstrasse.
The city of Frankfurt held a European planning competition in 2009. The Grünflächenamt, Frankfurt’s green space department, organized it. Sinai, Berlin landscape architects, won. The park’s inauguration was on July 18, 2015.
Hafenpark arose from the garden-architectural redesign of fallow land. These areas emerged during the European Central Bank’s construction. Bridge and road renovations also contributed. The construction of Osthafenbrücke and its transport links played a role.
Hafenpark integrates into Frankfurt’s Green Belt. It also connects to the network of cycling and hiking trails. A section of the Green Belt circular trail runs along the park’s west edge. Frankfurt’s Ostbahnhof is about 500 meters north. It provides public transport access.
The first completed section was the “Concrete Jungle” skate and BMX track. It opened in December 2012. Next came the sports and play “ribbon” across the park’s middle. This area has basketball pitches and multi-purpose fields. A climbing park and fitness equipment followed in summer 2013.
Now, skateboarders and BMX bikers call Hafenpark their own. The Freeletics community also joined them. Meadow areas face the river. These cater to those seeking relaxation. This final section offers quiet retreats. You can find them on raised plateaus among shady groves. Wildflower meadows surround them.
Hafenpark stretches from the ECB tower to the Honsell Bridge. It marks the endpoint of the river promenade. It also signifies Frankfurt’s green belt’s northern edge. The park’s layout reflects the visual axis. This runs between Honsell Bridge and Frankfurt’s skyline. The steel trellis features highlight the sports and play trail.
A broad north-south vista connects the “Concrete Jungle” to the Main. This creates an atmospheric mix. You get vibrant activity and calm spaces. There is fun sports and quiet contemplation. The city of Frankfurt calls it the public park of the 21st century.
