Gazing upon the Anciens Bains-Douches de la Fosse n°2, can you envision the echoes of splashing water and lively chatter that once filled this space? Constructed in 1890 by architect Albert Baert, the Anciens Bains-Douches, or Lille Baths, served a vital social and hygienic purpose. These baths represented a progressive step towards public health and well-being. The structure boasted an impressive 270 cabins, multiple shower rooms, a steam room, and two pools. Notably, the Anciens Bains-Douches housed one of France’s first heated swimming pools. Imagine the luxury in a time when such amenities were rare. This place was more than just baths. It was a hub of social activity and the birthplace of French competitive swimming. Léon Verdonck, director of the Lille Baths, spearheaded this movement. He founded two of France’s earliest competitive swimming clubs: the Tritons Lillois and the Pupilles de Neptune de Lille. The latter holds the distinction of being the oldest water polo club in France. In 1898, only three clubs practiced competitive swimming: these two Lille-based clubs and the Libellule de Paris. The Anciens Bains-Douches held a prominent role in shaping this emerging sport. The neoclassical facade, with its distinct Belle Époque style, hints at the grandeur within. Four columns, partially crafted from pink marble, support an entablment and a balustraded balcony. This elegant design reflects the importance placed on aesthetics and public image at the time. Sadly, the story of the Anciens Bains-Douches took a turn in 1981. Deemed non-compliant with safety regulations, the facility closed its doors. The pool never reopened. The building met its final fate in 1998. It was demolished to make way for offices and apartments. Only the facade remains, a poignant reminder of a bygone era. Restored in 2009 and protected by glass panels, it stands as a silent testament to the social and architectural history of Lille. So, as we stand here before the facade of the Anciens Bains-Douches de la Fosse n°2, let us remember the lives it touched, the athletes it nurtured, and the community it served. Though the building itself is gone, its story echoes in the history of Lille.
