What if a park could tell a story? Westwood Park in Denver certainly can. For years, this small patch of green in southwest Denver was more of a problem than a place of peace. The trees hid illegal activities. The lack of lighting and amenities kept families away. It was a forgotten space, an empty field bordered by backyard fences. Some longtime residents didn’t even know Westwood Park existed. Those who did were hesitant to let their children play there. But the community, primarily Latino with a large immigrant population, refused to accept this. They yearned for a park that would bring them together, a place of pride and connection. Westwood Unidos, a grassroots organization, took up the challenge. Starting in 2013, they knocked on doors, asking residents a simple yet powerful question: “What do you want in your park?” This sparked a community-wide conversation. In 2015, with a grant from Great Outdoors Colorado, Westwood Unidos began holding community meetings. Residents shared their dreams for Westwood Park. They voiced concerns about safety and expressed their desire for a space that reflected their heritage. They remembered playing in nature as children and wanted their kids to have the same opportunities. The result is the vibrant Westwood Park we see today. A wrought-iron gazebo stands proudly in the center, reminiscent of Mexican town squares. Large rocks and tree trunks create a natural playground, stimulating children’s imaginations. Fitness equipment, walking trails, and a traditional playground cater to all ages and abilities. Even a simple covered picnic area, once absent, now provides a welcome spot for families to gather. Westwood Park is more than just a park. It is a testament to the power of community. It’s a symbol of resilience and a celebration of cultural heritage. It’s a place where children’s laughter fills the air, replacing the silence of the past. Westwood Park tells a story of transformation, of a community that took ownership of its space and created something beautiful.
