Gazing upon Ryumyoji Temple, one can almost hear the whispers of the mermaid who, legend says, met her end on the shores of Hakata Bay in 1222. Ryumyoji, once situated near the bustling port, holds a unique history tied to this mythical creature. The temple’s original name is lost to time. However, the appearance of the mermaid, viewed as an auspicious sign, led to its renaming. Ryumyoji translates to “Dragon Palace Temple,” a fitting name for the final resting place of the mermaid, believed to be a harbinger of prosperity. The mermaid’s remains, entombed within the temple grounds, forever linked her fate to Ryumyoji. Adding another layer to this fascinating tale, the temple also earned the moniker “Reizen-san”. This name originates from an imperial court emissary. While the mermaid’s physical form rests beneath the temple, her story continues to ripple through the heart of Fukuoka. She serves as a silent testament to the enduring power of myths and their ability to shape history.
