Did you know that Harry Connick Jr once played piano at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church? This beautiful church on East 90th Street in Manhattan is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to the history of Yorkville. It’s a story etched in stone and stained glass.

Our Lady of Good Counsel Church stands as a proud symbol of faith and community. Built in 1892 its design by Thomas H Poole reflects a stunning thirteenth-century English Gothic style. The church was completed to meet the growing needs of Yorkville’s Catholic population. This area experienced a population boom in the late 19th century. Many German and Irish immigrants settled here. They found work in local breweries and factories.

The exterior is striking. Notice the crenellations and turrets. These architectural details echo those of the nearby Calvary Squadron A Armory. Inside the church the ornate interior is spacious. It features lacy Gothic details and galleries on three sides. Beautiful stained glass windows bathe the space in colorful light. The original Hook & Hastings organ built in 1891 was a marvel of its time. It boasted an impressive 41 stops and 50 ranks. However this magnificent instrument was replaced in 1959-60 by a smaller Kilgen organ. This Kilgen organ is still there today.

The church’s history intertwines with the development of Yorkville itself. It’s a neighborhood that transformed from a quiet residential area to a bustling community. Our Lady of Good Counsel played a central role in the lives of its parishioners. It provided not only spiritual guidance but also a sense of belonging.

Beyond its architectural beauty and musical history Our Lady of Good Counsel Church continues to serve its community. It remains a vibrant center of faith and fellowship. Take a moment to appreciate the stories within its walls. Feel the weight of history. Imagine the generations of worshippers who have passed through its doors. Reflect on the enduring legacy of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church. A place where faith and community have thrived for over a century.
