Baiyun Lake whispers a story of transformation. Here, where the city’s heart beats, lies Guangzhou’s largest artificial lake. Baiyun Lake, a testament to human ingenuity, was once just a vision. Built in the 21st century, this 3000-mu expanse of shimmering water is more than just a scenic vista. Baiyun Lake plays a crucial role in the city’s well-being. It’s a key part of a comprehensive water conservancy project. This includes the Guanghe pumping station, a diversion canal, and the Shijinghe pumping station. The lake, split into East and West sections, covers over 2 square kilometers. Almost half of this is water, a vast, tranquil mirror reflecting the sky.
Baiyun Lake’s primary purpose is to sustain the surrounding rivers with vital ecological water. It also serves as a reservoir for rainwater, a safeguard against flooding. But Baiyun Lake is not just about function. It’s a place of leisure, a sprawling park where nature and human design intertwine. Imagine strolling along the 8183-meter lakeshore, the gentle lapping of water against the banks a soothing symphony. Picture the vibrant hues of Chonglian Park, the shimmering Golden Screen Curtain, and the graceful Lake View Dance. These are just a few of the attractions that beckon visitors to explore Baiyun Lake’s diverse offerings.
Baiyun Lake’s story is one of vision and meticulous planning. It is the first phase of the ambitious Pearl River Channel diversion project. This project brings life-giving water from the Pearl River to nourish the city’s northern waterways. Every day, a million cubic meters of fresh water flows from the Pearl River, via the Guanghe pumping station and a specially constructed canal, into Baiyun Lake. From here, the water rejuvenates the Shijing River and replenishes 20 other rivers in the northern part of Guangzhou. This intricate network of waterways, connected by Baiyun Lake, improves the water quality of over 60 rivers.
Baiyun Lake is also a place of recreation. Whether you prefer the thrill of a Dragon Boat Race or the quiet contemplation of Spring in Cherry Forest, Baiyun Lake offers something for everyone. The lake also features designated fishing areas, inviting anglers to cast their lines and enjoy the serenity of the surroundings. Baiyun Lake is a place of constant evolution. Plans are underway to develop the surrounding area into a bustling new town. This ambitious project envisions a harmonious blend of residential, commercial, and recreational spaces, all centered around the lake’s tranquil beauty. Baiyun Lake, once a dream, is now a vibrant reality. It stands as a symbol of Guangzhou’s commitment to balancing urban development with ecological preservation.
