Built in 1551 by Afonso Braz the Capela dos Fiéis de Deus stands before you. A small chapel it was initially dedicated to the souls in Purgatory. Legend says Afonso used stones from a nearby cemetery. These stones were traditionally placed on graves. People believed this prevented the souls from returning to haunt the living. This practice formed the basis of the name “Fiéis de Deus” or Faithful of God.

The original chapel had a simple rural design. It was later rebuilt in 1690 by Father Gil Lourenço. This rebuild included a gilded altarpiece. It also boasted walls adorned with azulejo tiles and oil paintings by Bento Coelho da Silveira. Sadly the 1755 earthquake caused partial damage. The structure was then reconstructed in a simpler style.

Today the Capela dos Fiéis de Deus remains a testament to history. Its humble exterior hides a rich past. It reflects both ancient beliefs and evolving architectural styles. This little chapel played an even more surprising role. A hermit lived here in the 16th century. His duty was to reunite lost children with their parents. Imagine the stories he could tell. Documents from 1628 prove this. The Capela dos Fiéis de Deus wasn’t alone in this unique task. Other institutions like the Hospital dos Palmeiros and the Ermida de Nossa Senhora do Paraíso also undertook this important work.

The Capela dos Fiéis de Deus isn’t just a building. It’s a living piece of Porto’s history. It embodies the city’s devotion and its compassionate spirit. A place where ancient rituals and modern life intertwine. This is a spot that deserves more than a passing glance. It deserves quiet reflection.
