Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Brisbane’s Roma Street Parkland, an extraordinary tribute unfolds. The Queensland Greats, a collection of bronze plaques, stand as a testament to the remarkable individuals and institutions that have shaped the very essence of Queensland. These plaques, nestled within this urban oasis, whisper tales of innovation, courage, and unwavering dedication. The Queensland Greats Awards program, established in 2001, seeks to honor those whose contributions have indelibly marked the state’s history and development. From scientists and athletes to artists and philanthropists, the recipients represent a diverse spectrum of fields. Each plaque at the Queensland Greats bears the name of an individual or institution, along with a brief description of their accomplishments. In 2024, seven new names were added to this esteemed roster, their plaques joining the 125 individuals, 20 institutions, and 11 posthumous recipients already honored. Among these luminaries is Emeritus Professor Peter Andrews AO, a biotechnology pioneer and advocate who played a pivotal role in establishing Queensland’s biotechnology sector. Natalie Cook OAM OLY, an Olympic gold medalist and athlete advocate, stands as a symbol of athleticism and dedication. Keri Craig-Lee OAM, a fashion and business leader, has left an indelible mark on the industry. Scott Hutchinson, a construction veteran and arts advocate, has demonstrated his commitment to both industry and culture. Getano Lui (Jnr) AM, an advocate for the Torres Strait Islands, has tirelessly championed the rights and recognition of his community. Sir Bruce Small, posthumously honored, was instrumental in putting the Gold Coast on the global map. And LifeFlight, a leading aeromedical care provider, has saved countless lives with their unwavering dedication. The Queensland Greats at Roma Street Parkland is more than just a collection of plaques. It is a living testament to the spirit of Queensland, a place where visitors can reflect on the extraordinary contributions of those who have helped shape this state. It is a celebration of vision, perseverance, and the power of the human spirit.
