That imposing structure before you is the San Diego Central Library. It’s not just a building. It’s a living testament to San Diego’s rich history. This magnificent building is a modern marvel but its story begins much earlier.

The San Diego Public Library itself was established way back in 1882. Imagine a time before the internet before even widespread electricity. The first library was housed in a rented space. It was a simple bank building on Fifth and G streets. Think about it. A library tucked into a bank. A rather unlikely pairing yet fitting given the library’s later growth.

A major turning point arrived in 1899. San Diego became the first city west of the Mississippi to receive a Carnegie Library grant. This led to the construction of a new building in 1902 on Eighth and E streets. It served the community well for decades. This Carnegie Library was eventually demolished. It made way for a new Central Library opened in 1954 at the same location. The new library in turn served its purpose for almost 60 years. It then closed permanently in 2013. This closure marked the beginning of a new chapter. The transition began. A ten-week process of transferring a massive collection of 2.6 million items. This was no small feat.

The library you see today? It’s the result of that monumental transfer. This new $184.9 million building opened in 2013. The impressive 9-story structure designed by Rob Wellington Quigley. It boasts bay view terraces roof gardens. A public reading room an auditorium. It even has an art gallery. This impressive building houses not only books but also a charter high school. e3 Civic High School. It’s the only school in the US housed within a library. It occupies floors six and seven.
