Sounds of drums once echoed here at the Shri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir. This Jain temple stands as a testament to time and faith. It is located opposite the Red Fort in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk. Shri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir is the oldest and best-known Jain temple in Delhi.
Built in 1656, the temple has witnessed the rise and fall of empires. Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan invited Jain merchants to settle in the city. He granted them land near Chandni Chowk. Here they could build their temple.
Originally, the deities resided in a tent. It belonged to a Jain officer in the Mughal army. This is why some called it Lashkari Mandir. The main idol is devoted to Lord Parshvanath. He was the 23rd Tirthankara.
Legend says Aurangzeb banned musical instruments in the temple. Yet, the sounds of drums persisted. He visited himself and lifted the ban. The Shri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir stands as a symbol of secular Delhi.
The temple’s red sandstone gives it the name “Lal Mandir”. A Manastambha column greets visitors at the entrance. The main devotional area is on the first floor. Intricate carvings and paintings adorn the walls.
Inside, find statues of Rishabhanatha and Lord Mahavira. The atmosphere is peaceful and serene. Devotees offer fruits, grains, rice and candles. Lighted candles create a tranquil ambiance.
The Shri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir also runs a charitable bird hospital. It is the only one of its kind. It treats almost fifteen thousand birds every year. Inspired by Mahavir’s message to “live and let live”. The hospital provides free treatment. Injured birds receive care and recuperate. Those healed are released on Saturdays.
