“A church bell that witnessed history?” you might ask. “Right here in San Antonio?” Indeed, La Hermosa Templo holds a fascinating claim to fame. While the exact origins of La Hermosa Templo are shrouded in mystery, the church holds a unique piece of Texas history. Nestled within its walls is a church bell with a story to tell. This bell, you see, once belonged to the San Fernando Cathedral. It bore silent witness to the tragic fall of the Alamo on March 6, 1836. The bell’s solemn tolls echoed across the city, a somber announcement of the Texan defeat. And as if forever bound to this poignant moment, the bell tolled again in 1837. This time, it marked the funeral of the fallen Alamo heroes: William Barrett Travis, Davy Crockett, and James Bowie. In 1904, the San Fernando Cathedral acquired a new set of bells. This historic bell found a new home at La Hermosa Templo, shortly after the church’s completion in 1911. It serves as a powerful reminder of the rich and sometimes turbulent history of San Antonio.
