Perhaps the best-known of Porto’s viewpoints is the Mirador. From here, the view over the Ribeira is magnificent. It is a great way to take in some of the main sights of the city.

The Dom Luis bridge stands out. The Sé or Porto Cathedral is visible. The Bishop’s Palace rises above the patchwork of terracotta roofs.

Miradouro is simply the Portuguese word for viewpoint. The Mirador da Vitória is particularly appealing. What makes it so special? It is free.

Other great views of Porto exist. The top of the vertiginously tall Clerigos Tower offers amazing sights. Across the river, the terrace of the Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar in Vila Nova de Gaia provides vistas. However, these options aren’t free.

You may find the Mirador on Rua da Bataria da Vitória. The viewing platform seems to be on private property. Don’t worry. A sign declares tourists are welcome.

Porto was called Portus Cale in Roman times. It was a flourishing settlement on the Douro’s south bank. The nomadic Alani tribe later founded Castrum Novum on the north bank. The Visigoths took possession around 540 CE. They yielded to the Moors in 716. Christian forces recaptured Porto in 997. For a time, it became the capital of the counts of Portucalense. This was during Moorish rule in the southern part of the kingdom. The Moors briefly held the city again. But in 1092, it came finally under Christian domination.

Gustave Eiffel designed the Maria Pia Bridge. It was his last project before the Eiffel Tower.

September is grape harvest time. It is the best time for a Douro winery tour. The Douro Valley is the oldest demarcated wine region. Its landscapes are stunning throughout the year. During harvest season, it becomes alive. It is almost like an enchanted valley.
