“Harrowing experiences shape destinies.” That’s a thought that comes to mind as we stand before Saint Mary of the Annunciation. This church has a story deeply rooted in faith and sacrifice.

Saint Mary of the Annunciation, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, holds a special place in the history. Its story is intertwined with the courage of its founding pastor. This is Father Thomas Scully.

Father Scully’s life was one of extraordinary service. He was born in Ireland and educated in England and Rome. Later he was ordained as a priest in Boston. His journey took an unexpected turn when he became an Army chaplain. This was during the Civil War. He served with the Massachusetts 9th Regiment. This regiment was primarily composed of Irish Catholics.

Imagine Father Scully on the battlefield. He risked his life to administer to the wounded and dying. He was captured by the enemy, not once, but twice.

One account describes his daring escape. As a prisoner, Father Scully saw an opportunity. He urged fellow prisoners to crawl away under the cover of night. They were discovered. Bullets whizzed past them. Father Scully directed the men to throw mud to mislead their pursuers. They eventually reached safety.

His second capture was no less dramatic. He protested the mistreatment of Union soldiers. A Confederate officer threatened to hang him. Fortunately, he was spared.

Father Scully endured a terrible fever. But he was eventually released. His health never fully recovered from the war’s hardships.

Despite his failing health, Father Scully returned to Boston. He founded Saint Mary of the Annunciation Parish. It grew to include a grade school and a high school. Even a junior college was added called St. Thomas Aquinas College.

Saint Mary of the Annunciation stands as a testament to Father Scully’s resilience. It also reflects his unwavering commitment to his community. The Archdiocese of Boston has always sent chaplains to serve in the Armed Forces. Father Scully was one of those.

Today, Saint Mary of the Annunciation continues to serve. It offers regular masses and services. These include Saturday Vigil Masses and Spanish masses. Saint Mary of the Annunciation is more than just a building. It is a symbol of faith. It is a beacon of hope. It’s a legacy of service.
