Luth Kirchengemeinde Ahrensburg stands in Ahrensburg a town not far from Hamburg. It’s a place of quiet contemplation a sanctuary in the heart of a bustling region. While the current structure stands today its history stretches further back. A 13th-century mansion with a moat and towers called Burg Arnesvelde existed three kilometers away. In 1327 the church itself owned this fortified dwelling. The Reformation brought changes. The property then fell to King Frederick II of Denmark.

In 1567 Daniel Rantzau acquired Burg Arnesvelde. His brother Peter inherited it. He demolished portions of the old structure. He laid the foundation for what is now the nearby Ahrensburg Palace. The construction of the present Schloss Ahrensburg began after 1585. It’s quite a contrast to the earlier Burg Arnesvelde. Peter Rantzau initiated the building of this Renaissance-style mansion. The moat then took on an artistic role instead of a defensive one.

Interestingly the four corner turrets weren’t part of the initial design. They were added later. Between 1594 and 1596 a chapel was built near the Schloss Ahrensburg. This chapel served the community’s spiritual needs. It also had residential outbuildings acting as an infirmary for the elderly and sick.

The Rantzau family held Ahrensburg Castle for seven generations. However in 1759 they had to sell. Heinrich Carl von Schimmelmann a Hamburg merchant bought it. He transformed the castle’s interior and the surrounding village. He turned the Schloss into a late Baroque masterpiece. He filled in one of the moats too. It’s believed he painted the exterior walls white. Before that the brick walls might have been unplastered with sandstone ornaments.

From 1759 to 1778 it served as Schimmelmann’s summer residence. The Schimmelmann family continued to use it as their main seat into the 19th century. Ernst von Schimmelmann (1820-1885) revitalized the castle’s importance. He added stables a bridge and a gatehouse. He expanded the English park too. The ballroom the last major interior addition was completed in 1855.

The family faced financial hardship during the Great Depression. They were forced to sell the castle in 1932. Since then the Verein Schloss Ahrensburg e V has helped to maintain the property. A castle museum opened in 1938. It was later renovated and reopened in 1955. It now hosts weddings concerts and children’s events. The Schloss and its museum are open to the public.
