Nestled beside the railway lines of the Südstormarnsche Kreisbahn, we find the Schule Billbrookdeich. This primary school, part of the Schule Am Schleemer Park network, has a long and fascinating history. The Schule Billbrookdeich first opened its doors in 1884. Originally situated at Billbrookdeich 75, the initial school buildings underwent reconstruction in 1891. The school has seen a lot of change over the years. After wartime damage, new constructions arose at the current address, Billbrookdeich 266, starting in 1951. A gymnasium followed in 1957, administrative offices in 1961, and further new buildings in 1968. The Schule Billbrookdeich finally moved into its present buildings in 1969. The old building at Billbrookdeich 75 was demolished in 1973. For many years, Schule Billbrookdeich served as both a primary and secondary school. This continued into the 1970s. In 2010, a significant merger took place. The primary, secondary, and intermediate school at Möllner Landstraße, and the Schule Billbrookdeich combined to form the Schule Am Schleemer Park. Even the gymnasium received a facelift between 2011 and 2013. Today, Schule Billbrookdeich teaches approximately 180 students, many from diverse backgrounds. Most children come from the nearby accommodations at Billbrookdeich, Billstieg, and Berzeliusstraße. This multicultural environment allows for a rich exchange of learning. Currently, grades 1 and 2 have two classes each. Grades 3 and 4 have one class per grade. A preschool class offers playful learning opportunities. There are also three “Basisklassen” for intensive support and two “Internationale Vorbereitungsklassen” for children needing language preparation. Schule Billbrookdeich fosters inclusive education. Children with diverse learning needs learn together. A team of teachers, special educators, and caregivers supports their individual strengths and talents. The school day runs until 1 p.m., followed by language support in small groups until 1:45 p.m. Afterwards, the “Schulkinderclub” provides after-school care. The “brotZeit” project adds a special touch. Senior volunteers prepare and serve free, healthy breakfasts for students before school, fostering community and warmth.
