Across the canal stands the magnificent Собор Воздвижения Креста Господня, also known as the Resurrection Cathedral. Its majestic form dominates the skyline, a beacon of faith and history. The cathedral’s story begins in the early 18th century, a time of transformation for Saint Petersburg. In 1718, a wooden church graced this spot, built by Vasily Feodotov. It bore the name of Alexander Nevsky Monastery, honoring the city’s patron saint. In 1719, it was consecrated in the name of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, hence the cathedral’s full name: Собор Воздвижения Креста Господня.

The original wooden structure was replaced in 1748 by a stone church, but it met an unfortunate end during the 19th-century renovations. The Собор Воздвижения Креста Господня we admire today began its journey in 1764, under the guidance of architect Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God. The construction continued until a fire ravaged the nearly completed cathedral in 1842. Architect Yegor Dimmert stepped in, meticulously recreating the cathedral’s baroque style. The cathedral’s central dome boasts a height of 41 meters, with the bell tower reaching 60 meters.

The cathedral served as a parish church and also housed educational establishments. In 1875, an orphanage was established on the cathedral grounds, catering to around 60 children aged 7 to 12. The orphanage operated a school, ensuring the children’s education. Throughout its history, the Собор Воздвижения Креста Господня has been a center of community life. In 1900, a free canteen was opened, serving meals to the needy. In 1913, the “John-Predtechensky Brotherhood of Sobriety” was established to address alcoholism within the community.

The 20th century brought its share of challenges. In 1932, the cathedral was closed and repurposed for a radio workshop. Sadly, it was closed again in 1938, its interior falling victim to neglect and damage. In 1947, restoration efforts began, bringing the cathedral back to life as a functional structure. In 1991, after the fall of the Soviet Union, the Собор Воздвижения Креста Господня was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. The cathedral’s name was restored, solidifying its historical and spiritual significance. Today, the Собор Воздвижения Креста Господня continues to serve the faithful. It is a symbol of resilience, mirroring the city’s own journey through tumultuous times. As you gaze upon its grandeur, remember the countless individuals who have passed through its doors, seeking solace and connection.
