The roar of the Lobos. That’s what first struck me about Cesar E Chavez High School. This isn’t just a building. It’s a symbol. A testament to the spirit of a community. A community largely Hispanic. A place built on dreams. Dreams of a better future for its students.
Cesar E Chavez High School opened in the fall of 2000. It was a much-needed addition to the Houston Independent School District. Austin and Milby High Schools were bursting at the seams. Overcrowding was a serious problem. The new school was meant to alleviate pressure. It relieved the strain on nearby schools. It opened its doors to nearly 1500 students.
But the story of Cesar E Chavez High School is more than just numbers. It’s a story of resilience. It’s a story of overcoming challenges. Before the school even opened. There were protests. The Unidos Contra Environmental Racism group raised concerns. They worried about the school’s proximity to chemical plants. Concerns about potential chemical leaks were valid. The school is remarkably close.
Despite these challenges Cesar E Chavez High School stands tall. It proudly serves grades nine through twelve. It provides a diverse range of educational programs. It offers an Environmental Science magnet program. It’s even an International Baccalaureate school. The school has a vibrant athletic program. The Lobos compete in various sports. They have a state-of-the-art facility with a track tennis courts a pool and more.
The school’s namesake Cesar Chavez is a powerful figure. He was a civil rights activist. He fought tirelessly for farmworkers’ rights. The school carries his legacy. The school embodies his commitment to social justice.
Cesar E Chavez High School is more than just a school. It’s a community center. It’s a place of learning. It’s a place of hope. It’s a place where students strive for success. Despite facing hardship the school and its students persevere. They show the strength of their community. They are the Lobos. Their roar echoes across the years. They are Chavez. They are proud. They are resilient. They are the future.
