Completed in 1973, the Minato Bridge stretches across Osaka Bay. It links Sakishima Island and the Port of Osaka. This isn’t just any bridge. The Minato Bridge is a marvel of engineering, a double-decker cantilever truss bridge. The upper deck carries the Hanshin Expressway Route 16 Osakako Line. The lower deck hosts Route 5 Bayshore Line. Imagine the immense scale of this structure. The Minato Bridge boasts a central span of 510 meters. It also has two side spans of 235 meters each, for a total length of 983 meters. Did you know the Minato Bridge is the third longest of its kind? Only the Quebec Bridge and the Forth Bridge surpass it in length. Building the Minato Bridge was no easy feat. The unstable ground beneath, with layers of clay and gravel, made some designs impossible. Arch and suspension bridges were ruled out. The solution? High-strength steel was used in its cantilever design. This minimized weight and allowed the bridge to stand strong. The Minato Bridge’s construction cost a staggering 25 billion yen in 1974. That’s about 117 million US dollars! Its center span was a unique undertaking. It was transported by barge and hoisted into position using winches attached to the cantilevered ends. Seismic safety is paramount in Japan. The Minato Bridge, originally built in 1974, underwent significant retrofitting. Isolation bearings were installed between the decks and floor beams. Buckling restrained devices were added to the towers. This ensured the bridge could withstand future earthquakes. So, as you stand here, gazing at the Minato Bridge, appreciate its size and innovative design. It’s a testament to human ingenuity and a vital artery of Osaka.
