Imagine yourself standing before a majestic temple, its elaborate architecture a testament to centuries of history and cultural exchange. The 萬福寺, or Manpuku-ji Temple as it is known in English, stands tall and proud, a beacon of Zen Buddhism in the heart of Uji, Kyoto. Founded in 1661 by the Chinese monk Yinyuan Longqi, it’s a rare example of a temple built in the style of Ming Dynasty China. The temple was specifically designed to replicate Wanfu Temple on Mount Huangbo in Fujian, China, demonstrating a deep connection to its roots. The complex is filled with beautiful structures, including a main worship hall, a gate, and a treasure house containing a collection of Buddhist scriptures.

Stepping through the Sōmon Gate, you can’t help but notice the two wells called Ryūmokusei. Ingen, the temple founder, dug them up during winter. The entire temple is thought to represent the body of a dragon, with the wells symbolizing the dragon’s eyes. A dragon is a symbol of power and wealth in Chinese culture, so the temple was intended to be a place where everyone who visited could achieve something great. It certainly seems to have achieved that goal! The temple is full of interesting details. The Sanmon Gate, for example, is a traditional two-layered tower gate. You’ll find an ordination stone at its side. This stone reminds people that they’ve entered a holy area where alcohol and pungent vegetables, like garlic, are not allowed.

Even the approach to the temple is symbolic. The ‘Sekijō’ path is made of square flat stones laid out in a rhombus shape. The design is meant to represent the scales on a dragon’s back and was reserved for the most important priests. The temple treasure house contains a complete collection of Buddhist scriptures commissioned by Tetsugen Doko and completed in 1678. This collection comprises approximately 60,000 printing blocks, which are still in use today. The temple’s main statue is a seated Gautama Buddha, a powerful reminder of its connection to the heart of Buddhist belief. In addition, the temple offers a special vegetarian meal, known as Fucha Ryōri, which is influenced by Chinese culinary tradition. The meal features a variety of dishes, including vegetables, tofu, and clear soup. If you’re looking for a unique and immersive cultural experience, a visit to 萬福寺 will leave you captivated.
