Consider this: Anna Nagar wasn’t always the sought-after prime area it is today. Once a suburban village named Naduvakkarai, Anna Nagar has transformed into a vibrant part of Chennai. It is named after former Chief Minister C. N. Annadurai.

Today Anna Nagar stands as a testament to urban planning and progress. We are walking through what was once Mullam Village. The Tamil Nadu Housing Board developed Anna Nagar in the early 1970s. This followed the World Trade Fair in 1968. The board created residential plots and apartments. It also designed commercial complexes, wide roads and school zones. Large parks and bus termini were part of the plan.

Anna Nagar is unique in Chennai. It follows a standard addressing system like those in the western world. This makes navigation easier. The roads are laid out in a matrix structure. Roads run parallel and perpendicular to each other. Avenues are interconnected by streets. Second, Fourth and Sixth Avenues run east to west. First, Third, Fifth and Seventh Avenues run north to south.

One of the most recognizable landmarks in Anna Nagar is the Anna Nagar Tower. B. S. Abdur Rahman built it for the 1968 World Trade Fair. For a small fee, visitors could go to the top of the tower. There they could enjoy excellent views of the city. Entry inside the Anna Nagar Tower has been stopped due to safety concerns. The tower and park have been renovated. It now features a skating rink. Silambattam is also practiced here. It is an ancient Tamil martial art form.

Another significant landmark is the Anna Arch. It marks the entrance to the southern part of Anna Nagar on Third Avenue. The Corporation of Chennai built it in 1985. It commemorated the platinum jubilee of C. N. Annadurai. M. G. Ramachandran inaugurated it on January 1, 1986. In 2012, there was a proposal to demolish the Anna Arch for a flyover. But the flyover’s alignment was modified. The Anna Arch was restored at a cost of ₹ 6.4 million.

Anna Nagar Roundtana is a bustling commercial hub. It is located at the intersection of Second and Third Avenues. Initially developed for the Madras EXPO in the 1970s. It was named Round Turn Over. It has markets and showrooms. It is an important landmark for shoppers.

Anna Nagar has two bus termini. The West terminus is one of the largest in the city. It provides buses to different parts of Chennai.

The Anna Nagar railway station was inaugurated in 2003. It was closed in 2007 for the construction of the Padi elevated rotary. The Anna Nagar railway station has remained closed.

The Anna Nagar Metro was inaugurated on May 14, 2017. It connects every part of the city. Anna Nagar has two underground metro stations. They are well-managed and maintained.

Anna Nagar has several temples, churches and mosques. Temples include Thirumani Amman Temple and Shyam Mandir. Churches include St. Luke’s Church and Shrine Of Divine Mercy. Mosques include Masjid Javeed Pallivasal and Masjid Thaqwa.

Anna Nagar is not just a residential area. It is a community with a rich history. It has transformed from a village to one of Chennai’s most sought-after locations. Its planned layout and landmarks make it a unique place to explore. Anna Nagar continues to evolve. It balances modernity with its historical roots.
