“Hagia Sophia inspired it.” Do these words spark your curiosity about this Charleston landmark? We are standing before the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity. It stands as a testament to faith and architectural beauty. This Grecian Society Church has a rich history. It started with a small gathering and grew into a vibrant community.

The story of this Grecian Society Church begins in 1908. The first service was held in St. John’s Episcopal Church. The Greek community in Charleston was growing. In 1909, about 50 residents formed the Parthenon Society. The Grecian Society followed in 1910. Their goal was to establish a church.

Just two years later in 1911, they built a church. It stood at the corner of St. Philip and Fishburne streets. This space is now occupied by Interstate 26. The community continued to grow. By 1923, about 50 families were part of the Greek community. They acquired land next to the church for a school and parsonage.

By 1930, the Grecian Society had purchased land for a community center. This is where the current church sits. The Hellenic Community Center was completed by 1941. The Greek community had grown to 250 families. A new church was needed. They decided to build it next to the Hellenic Center.

Construction on the Byzantine-style church began in 1950. It finished in 1953. The church’s name is inscribed in Greek above the entrance. The three-domed structure draws inspiration from the Hagia Sophia. This historic church of the Byzantine Empire is adorned with iconography. Photis Kontoglou of Athens, Greece, created these artistic elements. They include twelve painted medallions in the nave. There is also a depiction of the Last Supper. Stained glass windows add to the church’s beauty. Kontoglou was a leading authority on iconography. He was highly regarded for his work.

Harold Tatum designed the Grecian Society Church. He was a prominent South Carolina architect. Tatum designed many interior elements. These include the brass light fixtures, the Iconostasion, the altar, and the Bishop’s Throne.

The Grecian Society Church exemplifies Byzantine style. This style features ornamental domes and large open spaces. Colorful mosaics and paintings depict Christian subjects. The church is a two-story structure. It has a brick veneer and stuccoed brick foundation. The nave is circular. A large copper-covered dome spans the space. An aisle surrounds the nave. Octagonal towers with domed roofs flank the narthex. Crosses surmount all three domes.

The Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity hosts an annual Greek Festival. It takes place over Mother’s Day weekend. The festival’s increasing popularity led to another event in the fall.

The Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is significant for its Byzantine Revival architecture. It also has outstanding Byzantine iconography. The icons by Photios Kontoglou are particularly noteworthy. He was the most renowned iconographer of the twentieth century.

The Grecian Society Church is more than a building. It is a symbol of faith and community. It embodies the rich history of Charleston’s Greek heritage. As you leave, remember the artistry.
