Across the vibrant green of the courts, echoes the rich history of the University Tennis Club. Right here at Fenner’s, the home of CULTC since its inception in 1881, some of the greatest tennis players honed their skills. The University Tennis Club, founded a remarkable seven years before the Lawn Tennis Association, stands as a testament to Cambridge’s enduring passion for the sport. It’s not just a club; it’s the Lawn Tennis Association of the University of Cambridge itself, representing all colleges and institutions within the university. This means that members are part of a legacy that extends far beyond these courts. Before World War II, during the amateur tennis heyday, Cambridge Blues secured an astounding 28 Wimbledon Championships in singles and doubles. Names like H.W.W. Wilberforce, the first Chairman of the All England Club, resonate within these grounds. Think of Anthony Wilding, C.R.D. Tuckey, and H.W. “Bunny” Austin, who, alongside Tuckey, helped Fred Perry achieve four consecutive Davis Cup victories for Great Britain from 1933 to 1936. More recently, Mark Cox, a Cambridge Blue, played for the British team in the 1978 Davis Cup final against the USA. The University Tennis Club continues this legacy with around 100 members each year. Two men’s and two women’s teams compete in the BUCS Tennis Leagues and Cups, keeping the competitive spirit alive. The club maintains its prestigious connections through annual fixtures against other universities, county sides, and renowned clubs like the All England Club, Queen’s, and Roehampton. Whether you are a seasoned player or just starting out, the University Tennis Club offers something for everyone. The club offers coaching and training sessions for team members, along with practice sessions arranged for social players. This ensures that everyone can experience the thrill of the game, surrounded by the echoes of champions.
