Founded in 1851 as the Auburndale Female Seminary Lasell University boasts a rich history. It began as a women’s seminary. The founder Edward Lasell a Williams College chemistry professor tragically died of typhoid fever during the first semester. Despite this setback the school thrived. It was soon renamed Lasell Female Seminary in his honor.
Lasell’s early years were marked by innovation. It offered a rigorous curriculum. The school included a highly scientific approach to domestic work art and music. It was known for its radical approach to women’s education. Lasell even administered Harvard exams and offered law courses to women.
The institution continued its evolution. It became Lasell Seminary for Young Women. Governance was given to a board of trustees and Principal Charles C Bragdon. Bragdon expanded the faculty further enhancing Lasell’s academic reputation. Lasell offered two years of college instruction as early as 1852. It’s considered the first successful and persistent junior college in the United States. In 1932 it became Lasell Junior College officially offering associate degrees in 1943.
Lasell transitioned to a four-year institution in 1989. It became coeducational in 1997. It became a university in 2019. The campus sits on 54 acres in Auburndale Massachusetts. It’s close to both the Auburndale Commuter Rail station and the Riverside MBTA station. A shuttle runs between the campus and the Riverside station.
Lasell hasn’t been without its challenges. It faced controversy in 2000 over its nursing program. A lawsuit in 2003 resulted in the university having to pay property taxes on Lasell Village. This was a senior education facility where residents paid to live and attend classes. In 2010 another settlement was reached. This involved paying $191314 to over 1000 students due to a financial aid department conflict of interest. Despite these setbacks Lasell persevered. It offers bachelor’s master’s and graduate degrees. It has a vibrant student life. This includes a student newspaper a yearbook and a radio station. Lasell’s athletic teams the Lasers compete in NCAA Division III athletics.
Today Lasell University stands as a testament to its enduring legacy. It continues to provide high-quality education. It stands as a beacon of opportunity for students from near and far.
