Let’s step back in time. The Department of Biochemistry at Oxford University began modestly. It started as the physiological chemistry section of the Physiology Department. In the 1920s, it blossomed into its own independent department. The Rockefeller Foundation granted funds for a new Biochemistry Department building in 1927.
Hans Krebs’s arrival in 1954 elevated the department’s prestige. His Medical Research Council unit investigated cell metabolism. Guinness funded the Iveagh Chair of Microbiology in 1955. Genetics joined the Biochemistry Department in 1970.
The Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics became part of the Biochemistry Department. It moved into the Rex Richards building in 1984. The Oxford Glycobiology Institute opened in 1991. It was housed in the Rodney Porter Building.
Today, the Biochemistry Department is part of Oxford University’s Medical Sciences Division. It is the largest of the university’s academic divisions. The New Biochemistry Building was constructed in two phases. Some older buildings, including the Hans Krebs Tower, were demolished to make way for this modern facility. Francis Barr is the head of the Biochemistry Department.
