Have you noticed how this mural seems to pulse with quiet strength? This is the Monumento Heroes De Malvinas Mural in Córdoba. It is more than mere paint on a wall. It’s a vivid story etched in color and form.

The Plaza de la Intendencia is iconic for Córdoba. It is a green lung in the Centre, next to the Cañada. It connects with the Paseo Sobremonte by a pedestrian street. Since April 2, 2022, when the 40th anniversary of the Malvinas War was commemorated, it is now called “Plaza de la Intendencia – Héroes de Malvinas”.

The Plaza was built in 1983. The Monument to the Heroes of Malvinas was placed there. It stands right on the corner of Duarte Quiróz and Cañada. Renaming it was a great step towards the construction of our collective memory.

The Guerra de Malvinas took place between April 2 and June 14, 1982. It happened during the last military dictatorship. On that April 2, Argentine citizens learned through the media. An Argentine joint force had “recovered the Malvinas Islands”. The islands had been occupied by the British since 1833.

The military dictatorship had been governing since 1976. It was already showing signs of weakness. There was a strong economic crisis. International human rights organizations and “Mothers and Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo” made claims. The military decided to embrace the historical claim of sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands. It was very present in the Argentine imagination.

The Argentine landing in the Malvinas Islands moved the country. It sparked a rebirth of nationalistic sentiment. Support for the operation in Malvinas did not imply support for the military leaders. For many Argentines, Malvinas signified a symbol of imperialist dispossession and a just cause.

This Guerra was terrible for all Argentines. It was especially hard for the young people who had to fight it. They were boys between 18 and 20 years old. They were from the classes of 1962 and 1963. The media baptized them as “the boys of the war”. More than 12,000 young soldiers were mobilized. Women also participated. They were mainly in nursing and assisting the wounded. They were also girls no older than 20 years old.

The citizen supported the war from another place. How did they do it? With donations of food, clothing, playing cards, cigarettes, and more. School children wrote letters of encouragement to the soldiers.

The “Córdoba Operation for Malvinas” was a radio program. It was broadcast for 12 hours from the Sala de las Américas. The idea was for people to donate money and jewelry. Those objects had a different destination than Malvinas.

After 74 days, the war ended. The president Galtieri announced the surrender of Argentina to England. All those feelings of euphoria went to desolation. In the Guerra de Malvinas 649 young people died. 1,300 were injured. More than 350 committed suicide.

The following year homages began to be created. It was in that year that this Monument was inaugurated.

The Monumento Heroes De Malvinas Mural serves as a constant reminder. It reminds us of the human cost of conflict. It also echoes the enduring spirit of a nation grappling with its past. Take a moment to reflect on the stories. Remember the sacrifices and the complex emotions. They are woven into the very fabric of this powerful tribute.
