Blackwell Island Light

Across the swirling waters of the East River, Blackwell Island Light stands sentinel. It has witnessed a fascinating transformation of Roosevelt Island. The island was once a place of exile, housing prisons, hospitals, and asylums. Now it’s a vibrant residential community. Blackwell Island Light itself, completed in 1872, embodies this change. The lighthouse was designed by the renowned architect James Renwick Jr., who also designed St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Built from locally quarried gray gneiss by penitentiary inmates, the lighthouse served a vital purpose. Its beam cut through the darkness, guiding boats navigating the treacherous Hell Gate. The light offered a beacon of hope to the island’s inhabitants. A plaque near the lighthouse once commemorated John McCarthy. Local legends say he was an asylum inmate who played a role in the lighthouse’s construction. Some stories even claim he single-handedly built a fort on the site before the lighthouse, defending the island against imaginary British invaders. Other tales attribute the lighthouse’s construction to another inmate, Thomas Maxey, a self-proclaimed architect, mason, and philosopher. The truth behind these stories remains shrouded in mystery. Blackwell Island Light served its purpose faithfully until around 1940. Years later, the lighthouse underwent restoration, returning its Gothic Revival architecture to its former glory. The 50-foot octagonal tower, with its ornamented corbels and iron-railed gallery, stands as a testament to a bygone era. It serves as a reminder of the island’s complex and often troubled past. Today, Blackwell Island Light no longer guides ships. But it continues to illuminate the island’s history.
