Lost in the heart of Seoul stands Buram High School. It is more than just a building. It is a place of learning and transformation. Buram High School opened its doors in January 2005. The school faced challenges attracting students initially. Many well-known private high schools already existed in the Buram area.

Then, in 2007, Shin became the principal. He implemented changes that would turn the school around. Shin created an after-school program. It was called Haesol Academy. The academy tailored classes to students’ preferences. The program became popular. Other high schools asked to duplicate it. Currently, about 500 students take 40 different classes.

One teacher Park Chang-ho noted a difference. He said public school principals tend to maintain the status quo. They often transfer every five years. Shin’s dedication was different. Sadly, Shin’s tenure was marked by overwork. He had been diagnosed with liver cancer seven years prior. His condition worsened. In March 2010, Shin collapsed at home. He was rushed to the hospital and fell into a coma. He passed away on March 14.

Lee Hyeon-ji was a third-year student. He was also the student council head. Lee wrote a eulogy. When he read it, those assembled began to weep. A faculty member Lee Young-su hosted the ceremony. He said it felt like the school was empty after Shin’s death.

Another student Park Jeong-a remembered Shin. She said he had a gaunt face when she first entered the school. She never thought he would pass away so quickly. She added that they all loved him so much.

Buram High School exemplifies South Korea’s dedication to education. Education has long been valued in Korean society. Learning was not widely available until after the Korean War. The modern system is based on a 1968 charter. This charter identifies education as an important aspect of citizenship. It also defines the government’s role. The government ensures all Korean children have access to education.

Historically, Koreans studied abroad. They often acted as a bridge between nations. Despite invasions, Korea remained independent until Japanese domination. After liberation, Korea suffered national division and the Korean War. Education in Korea was shaped by class consciousness. Birth into a good family was seen as a reward. Koreans believed society’s leaders should be the most educated.

During the Chosun Dynasty, children passing civil service exams led to family success. Private education persisted. Wealthier families spent money on special tutors. The Korean passion for education spurred rapid economic development. It also aided urbanization. This passion comes from respecting the educated. Under the monarchy, educated men ruled. Education was reserved for the elite.

Confucianism also shaped education. It emphasizes fairness and meritocracy. Human emotions and rationality required cultivation. Korea earned the nickname “the Eastern nation of etiquette.” Buddhism also played a role. Buddhist temples served as centers of learning.

Buram High School stands as a testament to the transformative power of education. It continues to inspire students to strive for excellence. Buram High School fosters a lifelong love of learning.
