The story of Biserica Acoperământul Maicii Domnului și Sfântul Voievod Ștefan cel Mare begins in 2001. It was then that the Archbishop of Bucharest approved its establishment. A priest named Mihai Stavara was entrusted with the task of securing land and documentation.
Help came from the General City Hall of Bucharest and the Sector 3 City Hall. They granted the parish the right to use a 2800 square meter plot of land. This land was located on Prisaca Dornei Street number 2.
With the necessary paperwork secured Father Stavara began his work. Services were initially held in a temporary church made of military tents. These tents were provided by the Ministry of National Defense. This “tent of prayer” faced Nicolae Grigorescu Boulevard. It stood near the Titan Polyclinic and Titan Park.
In 2002 the project for the new Biserica Acoperământul Maicii Domnului și Sfântul Voievod Ștefan cel Mare began. Architect Alin Negoescu and engineer Radu Stefanescu created the design. Patriarch Teoctist himself laid the foundation stone.
On August 29 2002 a ceremony marked this important step. Many priests deacons and faithful attended. The mayor of Sector 3 Eugen Plesca also participated. The church was dedicated to the Acoperământul Maicii Domnului the Mother of God and the Saints Cosma and Damian.
Parishioners contributed to the construction. Their donations and prayers helped Biserica Acoperământul Maicii Domnului și Sfântul Voievod Ștefan cel Mare rise. By 2006 the military tents were reclaimed. Services moved into the new yet unfinished church.
In that same year two annexes were built. One houses a parish office a candle shop and a mortuary chapel. The other serves as a refectory and office. The mayor Liviu Negoita donated an additional 500 square meters of land.
In March 2007 the parish welcomed a new deacon Mina Emilian Stavara. He is the son of Father Mihai Stavara.
Biserica Acoperământul Maicii Domnului și Sfântul Voievod Ștefan cel Mare extends help to the elderly. The church offers hot meals and food packages. Volunteers many of whom are local students assist in this mission. These acts of charity occur during major religious holidays.
The parish maintains strong ties with two local schools. These are schools number 196 and number 200. They participate in school events bless the start of each academic year and host award ceremonies. The church is built in the shape of a cross. It features multiple interior pillars and three towers. It measures 38 meters in length 18 meters in width and 28 meters in height. The iconostasis is carved from oak. This carving was done by Marian Mircea from Alba Iulia. Mosaics adorn the facade. They depict the church’s patron saints and the Archangels Michael and Gabriel.
Today services are held in the new church. The community strives to prepare the church for its iconographic adornment. They also seek to prepare parishioners for the joy of the church’s consecration.
