A breathtaking panorama unfolds before you. This is the Schlossbergturm.

The Schlossbergturm isn’t just a tower. It’s a testament to Freiburg’s enduring spirit. Built in 2002 it stands proudly on the Schlossberg hill. This hill has witnessed centuries of history. From 11th-century fortifications to the modern tower it has played a pivotal role in Freiburg’s story.

Fortified structures have crowned the Schlossberg for centuries. The original Burghaldenschloss a hilltop fortress changed hands many times. Freiburg’s citizens even took it twice. Once in 1299 using a catapult. Again in 1366 using cannons. The citizens razed the glorious fortress to the ground. Their victory led to Freiburg’s independence from its overlords. They bought their freedom for 15000 marks of silver. The Schlossberg’s strategic importance never waned. It endured sieges during the Peasants’ Revolt and the Thirty Years’ War.

Emperor Leopold I strengthened the fortress in 1668. He constructed the Leopoldburg. Louis XIV even visited the Schlossberg during its construction. However the French conquered both the town and the fortress shortly after. The Schlossberg faced further upheaval during the War of the Spanish Succession. The French again took the fortress. In 1744 Louis XV himself watched the siege from Lorettoberg. He nearly got hit by a stray cannonball.

The Schlossbergturm stands on the site of the Fort de l’Aigle von Auban known locally as the Salzbüchsle. The tower’s unique design is striking. Six Douglas-fir tree trunks initially surrounded the steel staircase. Sadly they were affected by pests and had to be replaced. Now steel supports replace the original wood. The architects used Douglas fir trees fallen in the Lothar storm of 1999. Each step bears the name of a donor who funded the project. Climbing the 153 steps to the top reveals the names of those donors. From the top the 360-degree view is spectacular. You can see from Kirchzarten across Freiburg to the Kaiserstuhl and Emmendingen. On a clear day the French Vosges are visible on the horizon. The Schlossbergturm is more than just a viewpoint. It is a modern marvel built upon a rich and complex history. It’s a true symbol of Freiburg’s resilience.
