Gazing upon Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, one can almost hear the echoes of its rich history. This church, a cornerstone of faith and community, has witnessed the passage of time and the unfolding of countless stories since its inception in 1928. Mount Pleasant Baptist Church was established by Reverend Robert E. Tate, Betsy Williams, and Albert Tate. Their first services were held in the humble setting of a Masonic Lodge Hall.
This lodge, a place of fellowship and community, served as the spiritual home for the burgeoning congregation. In 1936, the Masonic Hall underwent a transformation, becoming a dedicated church building. It remained the heart of worship for Mount Pleasant Baptist Church until 1960. During these early years, the church flourished, welcoming new members and strengthening its foundation in faith.
The congregation continued to grow, necessitating a new structure. In 1958, just a few feet from the original building, the present Mount Pleasant Baptist Church began to take shape. The first service in this new sanctuary was held on a momentous fifth Sunday in October 1960. The congregation, led by Reverend Tate, reflected on their journey, recalling the words of the hymn, “Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come.”
Reverend Robert E. Tate, ordained in 1930, served as the church’s steadfast leader. He dedicated his life to his calling, working to fulfill the great commission outlined in Matthew 28:19-20. His ministry continued until his passing in November 1971. Reverend Lionel Lee then took the helm as the second pastor in January 1972, guiding the congregation for ten years before answering another call.
Following Reverend Lee, Reverend Lorenzo Neff Sr. became the third pastor in September 1982. Under his leadership, Mount Pleasant Baptist Church saw the implementation of new programs and renovations to its physical space. Reverend Neff Sr. served diligently until his death in September 2000. The church then welcomed Reverend Johnnie Turner as its fourth pastor in February 2001. He served until January 2011.
After Reverend Turner’s departure, Reverend William Barrow served as interim pastor from February 2011 to February 2012. Then, in February 2012, the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church congregation elected Reverend Perry Jones Jr. as their current pastor. Reverend Jones delivered his first sermon as pastor in March 2012 and was officially installed the following month. Under Pastor Jones’s dynamic leadership, Mount Pleasant Baptist Church has embraced its mission to grow for the cause of Christ. The church has seen significant spiritual, financial, and numerical growth. Numerous individuals have joined the church community. New ministries, such as the Manup Men’s ministry, the Irock young adult ministry, and the One Way youth ministry, have been established. Mount Pleasant Baptist Church continues to be a vibrant testament to the power of faith, community, and dedicated leadership.
