Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton was born in New York City in 1774. She came from a prominent Episcopal family. Tragedy struck early. She lost her mother when she was only three years old.
In 1794, at the age of 19, Elizabeth married William Magee Seton. He was a wealthy businessman. They had five children together. Life seemed full of promise.
However, William’s health began to fail. He suffered from tuberculosis. In an attempt to improve his condition, the family sailed to Italy. William died there in 1803. Elizabeth was a young widow in a foreign land.

This was the first community for religious women in the United States. She also started St. Joseph’s Academy and Free School. This marked the beginning of Catholic education in the country.
