Step into a world of academic excellence at the Universität Hamburg Präsidialverwaltung. It stands as a beacon of knowledge in the heart of Hamburg. Today we will explore the story of this esteemed institution. It has shaped minds and contributed significantly to research and education.

The Universität Hamburg was founded on March 28 1919. This happened through the merging of the General Lecture System the Hamburg Colonial Institute and the Academic College. Its establishment marked a new chapter in Hamburg’s intellectual history. The city had long desired a university.

At the beginning of the 20th century, wealthy citizens petitioned for a university. Senator Werner von Melle advocated for merging existing institutions. However, concerns about costs and professors’ social ambitions stalled the plan. Despite initial resistance, proponents established the Hamburg Scientific Foundation in 1907. The Hamburg Colonial Institute followed in 1908. These institutions paved the way for the university’s eventual founding.

After World War I, the first freely elected senate chose von Melle as mayor. He and Rudolf Ross championed education reform. They successfully passed a law establishing the Universität Hamburg. It opened its gates on May 10 1919. This increased the number of full professorships in Hamburg from 19 to 39.

During the Weimar Republic, the university grew in importance. Its student population increased. Scholars like Albrecht Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Ernst Cassirer joined. The economic situation was difficult. The Hamburg Association of Student Aid was founded in 1922. Ernst Cassirer became the principal in 1929. He was one of the first Jewish scholars in that role.

The rise of the Nazis in 1933 dramatically changed the university. Political influence led to book removals and harassment. Many scientists including Ernst Cassirer had to leave. Students suspected of working with the White Rose were arrested.

After World War II, the university reopened in 1945. New departments were added. Significant construction occurred in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Student protests in 1968 led to structural reforms. Faculties were dissolved in favor of interdisciplinary departments.

In 2005, the Hamburg University of Economy and Politics merged into the Universität Hamburg. This merger restructured departments into six faculties. The Bologna process aimed to standardize European institutions. Tuition fees were introduced but later abolished in 2012.

Today the Universität Hamburg is made up of many properties throughout the city. The Main Building stands opposite Hamburg Dammtor station. The State and University Library Hamburg and the Audimax are nearby. The university supports Collaborative Research Centers.

The Universität Hamburg continues to thrive as a leading research university. It has a global ranking of 191 according to the QS World University Rankings for 2025. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2024 listed it at 136th place globally. Its commitment to research teaching and education remains strong.
