“Thirsty” Hagar’s frantic search echoes through time right here at As Safa. This is one of two small hills within the Masjid al-Haram Complex. It stands as a testament to faith, perseverance, and divine intervention.

As Safa’s story is deeply intertwined with the story of Hagar. She was the wife of Abraham and mother of Ishmael. Tradition says that God commanded Abraham to leave Hagar and their infant son in the desert. They were left with only basic provisions between As Safa and al-Marwah to test their faith.

When their supplies ran out, Hagar desperately sought water. She couldn’t bear to leave her infant son, Ishmael, alone for long. She climbed the nearest hill, As Safa. From there, she scanned the horizon for any sign of help. Seeing nothing, she rushed to the other hill, al-Marwah. Her hope was dwindling.

From each hilltop, Hagar could see that Ishmael was safe. But in the valley between, she lost sight of him. Driven by maternal love and desperation, she ran through the valley and walked when she was on the hillsides. She repeated this seven times in the scorching heat.

Imagine her exhaustion. Picture her unwavering determination. Feel her relief upon returning to Ishmael. A spring had miraculously burst forth from the ground. Angel Jibreel had struck the earth with his wing. This spring is now the Zamzam Well. It is a source of sustenance and a reward for Hagar’s patience.

The ritual of Sa’i commemorates Hagar’s desperate search. Pilgrims travel seven times between As Safa and al-Marwah. They mirror her footsteps and honor her unwavering faith. As Safa marks the beginning of this sacred journey. It reminds us of Hagar’s first climb in search of water.

As Safa is more than just a hill. It is a symbol of faith. It represents resilience and divine mercy. It is also said that Prophet Muhammad proclaimed his prophethood from this very peak. The verse to warn his tribe of near kindred was revealed to him here.

Consider the weight of history beneath your feet. Envision the events that unfolded on this very spot. Feel the connection to millions of pilgrims who have walked this path before you. They have all sought blessings and followed in Hagar’s footsteps.

After the conquest of Mecca, amnesty was declared from this hill. Even an oral confrontation between Prophet Muhammad and Abu Lahab occurred near here. It was followed by the revealing of Surah Lahab. As Safa is the closest hill to the Kabah, the sacred Hajr e Aswad, and the Zamzam Well.

Today, As Safa stands as a beacon of hope and faith. It invites all to reflect on Hagar’s story. Remember her unwavering trust in God’s plan. It is a reminder that even in the direst circumstances, relief and sustenance can be found. As you stand here, remember Hagar’s legacy. Carry her spirit of faith and perseverance with you always.
