Intricate swirling patterns dance before your eyes. This is the Book of Kells.

Before you lies one of the world’s greatest medieval treasures. A lavishly decorated copy of the four Gospels. Written in Latin it’s filled with additional texts. The Book of Kells stands apart. Its artwork surpasses other manuscripts from the same period. It boasts a sheer number of illustrations across its 680 pages. This magnificent work was intended for special ceremonial occasions like Easter not everyday use.

Although we don’t know its exact creation date it’s thought to be from around 800 AD. Three monks hand-wrote and illustrated it. They used their own handmade materials. This includes vellum inks and pigments.

Legend tells of its origins in a monastery founded by St Columba on Iona in Scotland. Viking raids made Iona too dangerous. Terrified the monks fled to their sister monastery in Kells County Meath around 806 AD. The Book of Kells journeyed with them. It’s unclear if it was completed in Iona or finished in Kells. What is clear is that it remained in Kells for centuries. Bishop Henry Jones of Meath eventually placed it in Trinity College Library in 1661.

Notice the detail. Each page is a masterpiece. The colors are vibrant. The craftsmanship is breathtaking. Some of the most ornate pages haven’t been on public display for decades. This is an incredibly rare opportunity.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the Book of Kells is the depiction of the Virgin and Child. It is the only important representation of a woman in the entire book. It is also the earliest surviving image of the Virgin and Child in Western manuscript art.

The Book of Kells has been displayed in a new showcase since September 14 2020. The case itself is a marvel of engineering. It’s designed to protect this priceless manuscript. It has sophisticated conservation features. The case ensures that every single page can be rotated for display.

Today the Book of Kells remains a testament to the skill and artistry of those monks. It continues to inspire awe and wonder. It is a treasure that endures. It is an iconic symbol of Irish culture and heritage. It is truly a sight to behold. Enjoy this incredible experience.
