Greater New Hope Baptist Church was founded in 1984. Reverend W.E. Nesbitt was the founder. He was divinely inspired. God instructed him in a dream to name the church “Greater New Hope”. This name came from John 14:12. This verse speaks of believers doing greater works through faith.
Initially, the congregation met in Reverend Nesbitt’s basement. As the church grew, it moved to various locations. Despite facing resistance, Reverend Nesbitt pursued land acquisition. He wanted to build a permanent home for the church. God provided. With assistance from the Greenville Southern Baptist Brotherhood, construction concluded in 1985.
Reverend Nesbitt led the church until his passing in 1989. The church then sought a new leader. Reverend Joe Styles served as pastor. Several interim pastors also shepherded the congregation. In November 1993, Reverend Dennis Smith became the pastor. He was officially elected in 1994. Since then, the church has experienced spiritual and physical growth.
Greater New Hope Baptist Church of Detroit embraces a motto. It declares “For we walk by faith, not by sight”. This reflects the church’s reliance on God’s guidance. Without His help, the church believes it would not exist today.
