From the summit of Seefingan, you can see almost all of Dublin. Seefingan, also known as Suí Fingain in Irish, is a mountain that sits on the border of County Wicklow and South Dublin. It is the 11th highest peak in the Wicklow Mountains and the second highest peak in South Dublin. At 724 metres, Seefingan is certainly not a small hill. The mountain offers magnificent views of the surrounding Wicklow Mountains, the city of Dublin to the east, and the Dublin Bay to the north. It is also home to a large megalithic cairn, believed to be a passage tomb, located a few hundred yards west of the summit. Now, imagine yourself walking through the boggy terrain to reach the summit of this ancient mountain. The wind whips across the grassy plateau, carrying with it the stories of countless hikers who have traversed this land for generations. The Wicklow Mountains have been integral to the history of Ireland. The mountains were formed after the last Ice Age and have been home to people for thousands of years. Seefingan plays a crucial role in the fabric of Irish folklore. Its name, which translates to ‘Fingan’s Seat’, is associated with the legendary hero Fionn Mac Cumhaill, leader of the Fianna warrior band. Fionn is said to have hunted deer in the nearby valley of Glenasmole and some legends say Seefingan was his favorite spot to watch over his warriors. While the passage tomb on the mountain is a testament to the ancient presence in the Wicklow Mountains, it is hard to distinguish stories from facts. But one thing is certain! Seefingan is a truly amazing place to explore. From the top of the mountain, you can see the legacy of history, the stories of folklore, and the beauty of the natural world. The views from the summit are truly breathtaking. You can see the city of Dublin, the Wicklow Mountains, and the Irish Sea, all in one panorama. When standing on the grassy plateau, it feels as if you are on top of the world. As you gaze at the view, try to imagine the ancient people of Ireland who stood on the same summit. This mountain is a place to reconnect with the land and to feel a sense of awe at the beauty of the natural world. Just try to keep your head down while walking through the boggy patches. You wouldn’t want to be the one to get a Jeep stuck in the bog.
