Whispers of history surround St James Episcopal Church. This isn’t just any church. It’s a landmark in Los Angeles a testament to faith resilience and community.

St James in-the-City as it’s known has deep roots. The first services were held in 1908. The parish officially formed in 1912 under Reverend Noel Porter’s leadership. Its early days were humble. They started with just sixteen parishioners and a monthly income of only $12.

The church moved several times. It outgrew its initial location. Later it relocated to a larger building at Western Avenue and Monette Place. Finally Reverend Ray Miller purchased land on Wilshire Boulevard. That’s where the magnificent current structure stands.

Renowned architect Benjamin McDougall designed the Gothic Revival building. It was constructed between 1925 and 1926. The building is striking. Reinforced concrete forms its base with a stucco exterior. The roof soars sixty feet high. A majestic bell tower reaches one hundred feet into the sky.

Inside the church is truly special. Redwood beams and trusses create a ceiling resembling a ship’s hull. The floor displays a Celtic cross motif identical to the nearby Immanuel Presbyterian Church. The stained-glass windows are breathtaking. Judson Studios crafted them over many years. They showcase traditional religious scenes. But they also depict modern imagery. A movie camera a moonwalk freeway lanes even the Korean flag and Latino immigrants are featured. These windows reflect the changing times and the diverse community that St James has embraced.

St James has played host to many significant events. Nat King Cole’s funeral was held there in 1965. Celebrities like Duke Ellington Frank Sinatra Robert F Kennedy and Pat Brown attended. The church is also a renowned performance venue. It’s used for choral performances organ recitals and chamber music. Hollywood has also discovered its beauty. St James has been featured in movies like Death Becomes Her and End of Days and in TV shows like Mad Men.

The church is more than a building. It’s a living community. It has a school and a rich history. From humble beginnings to international acclaim St James Episcopal Church stands as a beacon of faith and a vibrant part of Los Angeles. It is a place of both spiritual and cultural significance a place where history comes alive.
