“Only Hope” Spes Unica is not just a motto here. It’s the driving force behind Holy Cross of San Antonio. This Catholic college preparatory school has a story of resilience and commitment to its community.

Holy Cross of San Antonio opened its doors in 1957. The Archdiocese of San Antonio founded it. The Brothers of Holy Cross suggested it become a college prep school for boys. Eighty-four young men enrolled that first year. Tuition was just $67.50 per year.

But the story of Holy Cross of San Antonio isn’t without its challenges. In 1968, the Archdiocese threatened to withdraw its subsidy. This could have meant the end for Holy Cross. Parents, students, and faculty rallied to keep the school open. They resolved that Holy Cross would remain open under the supervision of the Brothers of Holy Cross.

To address financial strain and nearby Catholic elementary school closures, Holy Cross expanded. It included grades seven and eight. It became a middle and secondary school.

The Brothers recognized a need for medical services in the community. So in 1981, they established Holy Cross Family Medical Center. In 1985, the center expanded and moved across the street from the school. It remains in operation today.

Holy Cross of San Antonio transitioned to a coeducational student body. In 2002, the last Catholic high school for girls in the area closed. Over the following decade, Holy Cross gradually transitioned to a coeducational student body. It became fully coed in 2009.

Today, Holy Cross of San Antonio continues to thrive. It is an independent Catholic school with a board of governors. The school offers a comprehensive curriculum. It includes Advanced Placement and Dual Credit opportunities.

Christian service is a core value at Holy Cross. Students must serve the community through charitable acts to graduate.

Holy Cross has many traditions. The annual alumni softball tournament takes place each Memorial Day weekend. An alumni basketball tournament is held every year in June. It honors Daniel Gutierrez a graduate who lost his battle with Cancer in 2006. Proceeds go to a scholarship in his name.

Several notable alumni have walked the halls of Holy Cross. Emilio M. Garza is a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Stan Kelly is the public address announcer for the San Antonio Spurs. Bubba Hernandez is a former member of the polka band Brave Combo and Grammy Award winner. Roger Metzger played shortstop for several MLB teams.

Holy Cross of San Antonio stands as a beacon of hope. It provides quality education. It serves the community. It prepares students for college and beyond. Its history reflects dedication, resilience, and a commitment to its values. The school motto Spes Unica truly embodies the spirit of Holy Cross.
