“Madrid’s French connection began long ago.” Today, before us stands the Parroquia San Luis de los Franceses. It is more than just a church. It represents centuries of shared history between France and Spain.

Back in 1613, a Frenchman named Henry de Saureulx sought refuge in Madrid. He founded La Obra de San Luis. Its mission was simple. It was created to help the many French citizens drawn to Madrid’s booming economy. King Felipe III and Pope Paul V supported this work. Thus, a hospital called San Luis de los Franceses came to life.

The story of La Obra de San Luis is full of twists and turns. It mirrors the often turbulent relationship between France and Spain. Yet, it always enjoyed royal patronage from Spain. It also had French rectors. Fernando de Lesseps, a French diplomat, played a key role. In 1851, he helped create a Franco-Spanish agreement for La Obra de San Luis. A convention in 1876 solidified its operation. From then on, the French Ambassador in Spain would preside over it. He represented the French State which owned the organization’s assets. The King of Spain remained its patron.

Over time, La Obra de San Luis evolved. The original hospital transformed into a nursing home. It continued to provide care for those in need. A school was founded in Madrid in 1856. Later, a campus opened in Pozuelo de Alarcón in the 1960s. The Parroquia San Luis de los Franceses also became part of the organization. Its social mission still focuses on helping both French and Spanish people.

The Colegio San Luis de los Franceses now educates 1200 students. They range from kindergarten to high school. Until the final year of primary school, students follow a curriculum approved by the Agency for French Education Abroad. French language learning is a priority for all students.

The Hogar-Residencia is in central Madrid. It offers residents excellent care in line with the values of La Obra de San Luis. It has over 60 rooms.

In 1972 the Iglesia was moved to Calle Lagasca. It serves as a parish for the French community in Madrid. It stands as a testament to a lasting connection between two nations. The Parroquia San Luis de los Franceses continues to serve as a vital link. It helps bind France and Spain together.
