The Southern Baptist Convention of Texas expressed sorrow. This involved newspaper reports. More than 700 Southern Baptists had been sexually abused. These acts were committed by church leaders or volunteers. These abuses spanned the past 20 years.
Convention Communications Director Gary Ledbetter spoke about it. He said it’s horrible what happened. The abuse was reported by the Houston Chronicle and the San Antonio Express-News. He stated that it is a mark of the fallenness of man. This includes members of our churches.
Ledbetter explained the convention’s structure. It is a group of autonomous self-governing churches that cluster together. They have resources available. These resources help churches do more than background checks. They also provide how-to training for church leaders. This training includes how to recognize sexual predators. It teaches how to structure ministry for a safe environment. It also covers what to do if there’s an accusation of abuse.
An advisory group started within the church last year. They should issue a report. The report will detail how to change things. These are changes the denomination is doing. Past victims are providing the group with input.
Ledbetter urged anyone suspecting sexual abuse to call law enforcement. He emphasized making sure the victim is safe. He noted law enforcement has the power to investigate. They can assure the safety of victims. They can ultimately ensure justice for the victims.
