A chilling silence hangs in the air. We stand before the Kriegsgräberstätte der ehem. Zeche Graf Beust. This is more than a memorial. It’s a poignant reminder of a tragic event.
The Kriegsgräberstätte commemorates the lives lost during World War II. Ninety-nine Soviet prisoners of war perished here. They were forced laborers at the Graf Beust colliery. A German non-commissioned officer also died alongside them. All were victims of a devastating air raid on December 12 1944.
Imagine the scene. A massive Allied air attack. The terrified men sought refuge in a nearby air-raid shelter. It was a hastily constructed shelter. They had been forbidden to use the nearby Hochbunker a more secure option. A direct bomb hit collapsed part of the shelter. There was no escape. All perished in the suffocating darkness.
Rescue attempts were hampered by the collapsed entrance. A survivor Franz Marx described the scene. He recalled seeing the bodies intertwined. They had likely suffocated. He and other miners attempted to recover the bodies. They only managed to retrieve a fraction of the victims. The remaining bodies remained entombed. The entrance was sealed. Only the German non-commissioned officer was buried elsewhere.
The initial memorial was modest. A simple U-shaped wall a hedge and a sign. Years later a new memorial was built. The current Kriegsgräberstätte was created in 1963-64. It features a bronze relief. The relief depicts a figure collapsing. The inscription in German and Russian reads Here rest 99 Russian prisoners of war buried by bombs on December 12 1944. The memorial’s creation involved collaboration with the Russian Embassy. It later became a place of pilgrimage. Groups of former Russian forced laborers visited. Guided tours were conducted. Dr Ernst Schmidt recalls the visitors’ deep emotion and respect. They showed no desire for the bodies to be moved.
The Kriegsgräberstätte der ehem. Zeche Graf Beust is more than just stone and bronze. It is a testament to the enduring power of remembrance. It reminds us of the human cost of war. It serves as a place of quiet reflection on a dark chapter in history. It also highlights the international effort toward reconciliation and remembrance. Let us take a moment of silence to honor those who perished here.
